Tell us who you are…
I’m Rachel Blumenthal, CEO and Founder, Rockets of Awesome, mom to my two bananas kids, Griffin (7) and Gemma (3), wife to my incredible husband Neil, I am Fashion obsessed, Instagram addicted, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, desperately seeking sugar, Yogi, skiier and, beach walker.
1. Tell us about your business and what makes you stand out?
Rockets of Awesome exists to truly make parents and kids lives easier (and more awesome). We design the coolest kids’ clothing, at exceptional prices ($16-38), and seamlessly deliver it to our customers. Every item is super soft and stretchy, made to be worn from the playground to a party, and is sure to get you stopped on the street (think flip sequins, glow-in-the-dark sweatshirts, reversible bomber jackets and hidden pockets!) Moms always ask if we make it in their size 😉
2. How did you get started?
When I was 24 I was a publicist at Yves Saint Laurent. One weekend I made a ring, was wearing it one day at YSL and the editors I worked with at Lucky Magazine saw the ring, featured me and the next thing I knew I was a jewelry designer. I had no formal training (I was an economics major), didn’t “know” anyone and had no idea what I was doing. But, I was passionate about creating things, applied what I knew about working with editors to working with buyers and 500 stores worldwide later, I had built a fashion jewelry business. One business led to another and another and many years later I am on business number 3 (I’m either an endlessly passionate entrepreneur or a complete masochist). My greatest advice for anyone who wants to start their own business is to make sure you’re obsessively passionate about what you want to build, remain naive and don’t take no for an answer.
3. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Kids have the most magical, unpredictable confidence. It’s our responsibility and mission at Rockets of Awesome to ensure we are able to create the world that inspires and encourages them and the clothes that empower them to be their best selves.
It’s the stories kids and parents share with us that make every day rewarding – the 10 year old girl from Texas that’s no longer bullied for not having “cool clothes”, the little boy in Ohio that sometimes wants to dress in a tutu with his sister and the little girl in Massachusetts, on the spectrum, that will only wear Rockets because the fabrics are so magically soft.
The smiles and the joy our clothes bring to kid and parent makes every day insanely rewarding (even on the most challenging of days)!
4. How do we find you (aka how do we shop ROA)?
1. My favorite place to vacation is Aspen.
2. My biggest pet peeve is people who are slow.
3. My guilty pleasure is shopping, Cheese-its and massages.
4. My biggest fear is screwing up my kids.
5. My biggest accomplishment is having the confidence to name our company Rockets of Awesome.
