Before joining the team at Something Navy, I lead Merchandising and Brand Partnerships at one of the Internet’s favorite beauty companies, Birchbox.
This means I’ve been lucky enough to try nearly every major beauty launch that’s hit the shelves in the last half decade. I can’t wait to dive into beauty with you all on the Something Navy site and share some of my favorite products and tips.
Before we dig in together, there’s one important thing for you to know about me. Five years ago, I had a scare with melanoma that begged me to reconsider the ingredients I applied to my skin on a daily basis—I’ll write more about this story another time if you’re interested in hearing it.
So when it comes to my own personal ingredient philosophy and the beauty products that solidify their spot in my routine, I believe that clean is best, but more importantly, moderation is key.
While I don’t practice a 100% squeaky-clean beauty routine 24/7, the majority of the products I use are clean. As someone who built a career in the beauty industry, I’m just not willing to quit cold turkey and give up all of the magical high-performance products that seem to transform my skin or hair. Though clean beauty has come a long way, sometimes there’s just nothing like an inky-black liquid eyeliner with the type of high- payoff formula that requires chemicals to flow smoothly onto your lid… sigh. I save those favorites that might not necessarily be “clean” for once in a while and don’t stress when I break them out for a special occasion. For me, moderation means creating a beauty routine of clean everyday basics and adding a punch of non-clean color and performance when I really want to turn it up a notch.
Today I want to share my clean makeup routine with you. I’ve crafted it slowly over the years and finally found a combination of products I can count on to create an everyday look.
First up is the Holy Grail product that took me the longest to find. I needed a complexion product that would add sheen to my dry skin and cover my redness to project clear and even skin. Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation, which I mix in my palm with two drops of Herbivore Botanicals Phoenix Oil and press into my skin. Bonus points, the packaging on this foundation is gorgeous, refillable and totally sustainable.Shop the Foundation, Oil
