Thanks to our friends at NET-A-PORTER for partnering with us on this post
If the idea of “power dressing” makes you think of suits and stilettos, think again. In 2020 we’re all about powerful pieces that send a message about helping others, or making the world a better place (and styling them with suits and stilettos totally works!). That’s why we jumped at the chance when NET-A-PORTER asked us to style the special collection of T-shirts they designed with 20 of our favorite designers to mark their 20th anniversary, the proceeds of which go to Women for Women International in honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th. Not familiar with the amazing charity? Since 1993 Women for Women International has worked with over a half a million women to develop the skills and resources they need to overcome poverty, stand up for their rights, and create sustainable change for themselves, their families and communities. What’s more powerful than that?
From the moment those glossy NET-A-PORTER shopping bags arrived at SN HQ we knew we were in for some stellar outfits. Arielle’s style is the ultimate in casual-chic, and she’s a pro at styling anything with a tee. We couldn’t wait to see the “power looks” she came up with!
The Power Suit
A sharp blazer is an absolute must in our closets, but since we don’t work in a formal office, figuring out how to keep it casual requires a little bit of thinking. The perfect solution: layering with a T-shirt.
For me, kindness is a priority. It’s how we treat ourselves, others, and nature. It’s should sit at the core of all our relationships.
This limited-edition graphic style designed by Roxanne Assoulin for NET-A-PORTER’s capsule works with a black blazer, cropped pants and mules, creating the perfect version of a modern “power suit.” It feels boss-lady enough for a week meeting, but cool enough for dinner and cocktails after.
The Power Shoe
Wearing a major shoe—like Arielle’s go-to Louboutin knee-high boots—works best when the rest of your outfit is simple. This knee-high pair looks good with pretty much everything, but we especially love how they’re really the focus with a skirt-and-tee combo.
Because we need to talk! The conversation about women’s rights has just started and we have to do a lot more that is inclusive of all genders and races.
We’re obsessed with this Frankie Shop shirt too because it’s simple…but not really! There’s a subtle shoulder-pad—if that doesn’t scream power-dressing, we don’t know what does—and a bigger arm-hole than your average crewneck so it feels really special. Paired with a leather skirt, it reads a little tough, almost like fashion-girl armor.
The Power Attitude
You have an outfit you turn to when you need to feel strong and confident, right? We’ve all got them! For Arielle, it’s an amazing pair of jeans, a blazer, and a great T-shirt.
The T-shirt design is an irreverent wordplay on CHOO with a call to action to support the sisterhood of women across the world.
-Sandra Choi, JIMMY CHOO
The combo works really well with a basic white tee, but the fact that this one designed with Jimmy Choo has an inspiring message—helps support other women—makes it even more of a power pick. A great square-toe shoe (so right now) makes it a full confidence-boosting outfit from head to toe.
