Deep down we all know we *should* be practicing good makeup hygiene, but realistically it’s not always at the top of (or even on!) our to-do list.
When it comes to cleaning our makeup brushes, tossing old product and freshening up what’s in our makeup bags, drawers and cabinets, it only takes a few minutes to get to a healthy place so we don’t even have to think about how gross things can get. Check out our easy guide to the general rules of makeup hygiene here:
Clean Your Brushes
In addition to product building up in between the bristles, brushes can become a breeding ground for bacteria if you don’t wash them regularly. Not to scare you but… it happens! So take the necessary precautions and stock up on some good makeup brush cleansers.
For synthetic brushes, try this Beautyblender Cleanser Solid. For natural brushes, we go for The Natural: Citrus Brush Cleaner, which really gets the job done, even removing sticky lip liner pigments.
Check The Dates
This may seem like a no-brainer, but check the expiration dates on your liquid products. If you’re like us, you’ll be surprised at how much is currently expired! If products are passed their expiration date, toss them. If they’re almost expired, restock and be sure to remind yourself to get rid of the old ones ASAP.
Know The Rules
If your products don’t have expiration dates, follow these general rules for when to get rid of them. Nail polish and powders can last up to 2 years. Foundations, lipsticks and creamy products (like eyeshadows and highlighters) are good up to 1 year. Lip gloss should really only stick around for 6 months and your mascara and liquid eyeliner have a healthy shelf life of just 3-6 months.
