Every year on its anniversary, we love to give Breakfast at Tiffany’s the respect it deserves.
In honor of the infamous movie’s 58th year as a cultural fixture in our lives, we’re doing a deep dive into everything Holly Golightly and more.
Most of us weren’t around for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s box office debut, but we still think of it as one of the most important movies of our time. It’s just that iconic! It’s crazy to think that Marylin Monroe was supposed to be the star of the show, so much so that the screenwriter even tailored some of the key lines and parts for Marilyn herself. But Marilyn’s team thought the role wasn’t right for her image, so she had to pass and Audrey Hepburn signed on as the lead. Can you imagine Breakfast at Tiffany’s without Audrey Hepburn?! No? Neither can we.
It’s safe to say that the iconic dress Holly Golightly wears in the opening scene of the film is the *official* and *original* Little Black Dress of our time – the one that made Little Black Dresses a thing in the first place. And we’ve been obsessed with recreating its chicness ever since! Initially, the classic dress from the movie was supposed to be an original Givenchy (did you know Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy were best friends?) but the silhouette he designed was deemed too risque for the movie. Hollywood execs added on some extra layers and length so the new dress wouldn’t expose too much of Audrey’s leg. Even still, the LBD from the movie has truly stood the test of time!
